Common questions.

Straight answers about write-off categories, documents and the process.

What is a Cat S write-off?

Cat S (structural) means the car suffered structural damage but is legally allowed back on the road once it has been properly repaired and passes the required checks. Many Cat S cars are sold on and driven safely for years.

What is a Cat N write-off?

Cat N (non-structural) means the damage did not affect the vehicle's core structure, such as bodywork, electrics or interior damage. Cat N cars are generally easier and cheaper to put right than Cat S.

Can I sell a Cat S or Cat N car privately instead of to a specialist buyer?

You can, but most private buyers are wary of write-offs, and mainstream finance or warranty providers can be reluctant to deal with them, which usually means a lower price and a slower sale. Selling to a specialist buyer is typically faster and more straightforward.

Do I need my V5C logbook to sell a write-off?

You need to be able to show you're the registered keeper and legally entitled to sell the vehicle. Having your V5C, service history and any engineer's report ready speeds up the inspection and offer process.

What if my car doesn't start or drive?

That's fine, just tell us in the form. Non-runners are common among write-offs and are assessed the same way, based on photos and a physical inspection.

How is my offer worked out?

We look at the vehicle's pre-accident value, the extent of the damage, mileage and condition, then confirm the figure once we've physically inspected the car. The initial estimate from your form submission is indicative only.

Do you collect the vehicle?

Collection is available for eligible vehicles once a sale is agreed, depending on the vehicle's location and condition.

Will I need to tell my insurer or the DVLA?

If your insurer has already settled your claim and registered the write-off, check with them about any next steps on their side. You remain responsible for the vehicle, and any change of keeper, until the sale is completed.

How long does the process take?

It varies with the vehicle's location and availability for inspection, but the process is designed to move from enquiry to inspection to payment as quickly as reasonably possible.

Is there any obligation once I submit my details?

No. Submitting the form gets you an indicative response and you're free to decline any offer.
